Green Hills Kid’s Health: Guard Against Chapped Skin

When it comes to your Green Hills child’s health, you might first think of their diet. While putting vitamins and minerals inside your child’s body is important, you also need to pay attention to what is going on on the outside. I’m talking about your child’s skin.

The skin is our body’s largest organ and when skin’s smoothness is disrupted, small cracks and openings can create an entryway for bacteria and germs.

Active Green Hills kids don’t often think of the condition of their skin until it starts hurting. Playing outside in hot, cold, or dry weather can lead to small cracks around knuckles or nails. This painful condition is called dermatitis, or extreme dryness. Some pediatric dentists in the Chattanooga area are advising Tennessee parents to have their child use an oral rinse that contains fluoride. This has caused some parents to wonder if the use of an oral rinse is helpful for tooth decay prevention even if the child is taking a fluoride supplement.

The answer to that, according to my Chattanooga children’s dentist, is ‘Yes’. Why?

Fluoride supplements (usually only recommended if the municipal water is not fluoridated) help the teeth that are still forming in the jaw. Oral rinses, however, protect the teeth that have already come in. Fluoride supplements combined with an oral rinse strengthen all teeth: both baby and adult teeth.

OTC fluoride rinses (like ACT) can aid in children’s tooth decay prevention in Chattanooga. Chattanooga dentists recommend kids swish the rinse around in their mouth after they brush and floss. The solution should be the last thing to touch their teeth before going to bed.

A Healthy Toothbrush For Nashville Kids

As a parent of active Nashville children, I’m sure you’re always on the lookout for places where germs lurk, and you probably know that toothbrushes have the potential to grow a lot of bacteria. However, there are some simple rules you can follow in your Chattanooga area home to keep your child’s toothbrush (and your kid’s mouth) as healthy as possible.

One of the best ways to limit bacterial growth on a toothbrush is to allow it to dry completely between uses. This is best done by storing the toothbrush in a toothbrush holder on the counter, not tucked away in a drawer where air flow is limited.

A toothbrush holder is superior to a cup because it’s important that neighboring toothbrushes don’t touch and share germs.

Air drying toothbrushes is easy when you purchase two for each child at your nearest Nashville drugstore. Teach your kids to alternate between the two so they each have more time to dry out all the way.

Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months, mainly because normal wear and tear will make them less effective at cleaning teeth. But, regardless of the age of the toothbrush, replace it after your child has a cold or other illness.

Nashville Injuries: Get The Ice, Fast!

If your Nashville kids are active on the field, the court, or in your own backyard, chances are you have dealt with many bumps, bruises, and sprains. Prompt medical care can make all the difference when it comes to how quickly an injury heals.

Despite medical advancements, when it comes to a sprain, strain, break, or bruise, the best way to reduce pain and swelling is the same as when you were a kid: apply ice.

For the best DIY ice bag, fill a zip-top bag with ice cubes or crushed ice and a little water. The liquid will help the bag conform to the body and distribute the cold evenly. You can also use the frozen peas trick, which does essentially the same thing.

Don’t apply the bag to bare skin, however. This could cause frostbite or even a burn. Wrap the pack in a thin towel or article of clothing.

Don’t take the ice off too soon. Removing it after just a few minutes, when the skin is cold to the touch, won’t have a lasting effect. Leave ice on the injury until the area goes numb, but not more than 20 minutes. Repeat this once an hour for up to four hours.

Remember to get the ice on as soon as possible. Preventing and reducing inflammation speeds up the healing process. The sooner you get ice on it, the sooner your Nashville child will be back in action.

Turn Your Car Into A Mobile Nashville Office

If you are a busy Nashville home based business owner, you may have noticed that your work-at-home job has turned into a work-in-car job. I have been operating a direct marketing business out of my Nashville home since February 2010, but I spend a considerable amount of time on the road in the 37216 zip code area.

One day, I realized that the back seat was covered with Power Squares samples, the floor was covered with Xe Energy Drink brochures, and the dash was covered with sticky notes.

I have a beautiful office in my Nashville home: it is organized, comfortable and well-supplied. Why couldn’t I create a mobile version of my home office in my car?

I got to work. I headed out to my closest Nashville office supply store. I purchased a hanging file folder for paperwork and sturdy plastic boxes to organize samples in my trunk. (One of my Power Squares team members uses heavy cardboard banker’s boxes to hold samples. She thinks they are easier to label.)
